Tim Stoelinga is Senior Program Associate in the Learning Sciences Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC/LSRI), conducting research on an array of design-based research projects in mathematics education. His research focuses on the development and implementation of innovative approaches to instruction in STEM education. In particular, he studies how curricular supports and programs of teacher inquiry can enhance teaching and learning in algebra, particularly for under-prepared learners. Stoelinga is also interested in studying students’ development of positive identities as math learners, focusing on issues related to classroom discourse, participation, status, and positioning, particularly for students in underrepresented groups in STEM. He began his career in education as a high school mathematics and science teacher in Chicago. He also served in district leadership roles in K-12 mathematics in Chicago and Boulder, Colorado, before joining LSRI in 2008.
