The Metro Chicago Mathematics Initiative (MCMI) takes a systemic approach to build district, school, and teacher capacity, with collaboration among educators within and across districts at its core and work driven by a focus on student learning. MCMI provides professional development and on-site coaching for teachers, teacher leaders, administrators, instructional coaches, and math specialists. MCMI emphasizes and supports high-quality instruction, curriculum, and assessment and aims to transform mathematics teaching and learning in every classroom for every student.

  • Professional Development

    Mathematics Professional Development Consortium. High-quality resources and professional development workshops help teachers and administrators put learning into practice.

  • Coaching

    Coaches support administrators and teachers as they implement research-based strategies, project tools, and resources, and apply their learning in their classrooms and schools.

  • Customized Services

    Services are designed to meet the unique needs of individual districts and focus on areas of need. Examples include: developing internal mathematics coaches,  supporting curriculum review and implementation, embedding formative assessment practices, evaluating instructional materials, and using technology to engage students in mathematics.

Our focus was to make our math classes more student-centered…We also wanted our teachers to allow students to problem solve in the class…Much of [the] rote skill building was done through memorizing facts and not applying them to real world situations. The most important reason our district participated in MCMI was to improve student achievement…we feel these [instructional] changes are the catalyst for growth in math with our students.
