While the history of multilingualism in the U.S. has been a cycle of conflict and concessions, one thing has remained constant: the dominance of monoglot linguistic and cultural norms. From candidate to President Trump, the emergence of Trumpism seems to be marking a dramatic swing of the pendulum toward linguistic restrictivism and a nativist backlash. However, a closer examination of narrative events and everyday interactions in multiple contexts suggests a burgeoning language ideological shift toward polylingualism. In this presentation, I discuss the NIDALS framework for analyzing an emergent national conversation that moves us from the inertia of monoglotism and toward a polyglot stance.
