Abstract:
Effective teaching is critical for student success, but well-designed efforts to improve teaching have struggled to maintain effectiveness in different contexts and to reach the teachers most in need of support. How can we reach and support teachers at scale? This talk will share insights about this question from an ongoing, decade-long effort to build and study an online professional learning community for teachers. The talk will trace this project from its early naturalistic research on teacher reflection, community, and authentic professional learning choices to its current experimental research on designing effective online interventions for teachers. Throughout, the speaker will discuss the process of starting, maintaining, and refining a long-term program of work around a critical question.
