Title

What’s the Role of Blackness in a nice field like Learning Sciences?

Abstract

This talk will detail some of the ways I integrate Black Studies in Learning Sciences, emphasizing its pivotal role in comprehending learning. I’ll highlight a project where I use Black geographies framing to analyze the learning processes where young people are designing and building a physical space for folks in their community. I argue that Black studies, and particularly Black geographies, offers us a new understanding of place and space through the lens of learning. I focus and advocate for actively creating scholarly space that respects Black existence and life, acknowledging Black folks socio-, geo-, cultural, and historical contexts across time, while highlighting the ways Learning Sciences has struggled to wrestle with Blackness as a theoretical, methodological and analytical project. This theoretical approach provides a methodological foundation for a profound understanding of learning, addressing educational inequities and driving collective liberation and shaping the future.
