Fendt Receives CAPE Award

Carol Fendt, director of the Promoting Action, Inquiry, & Reflection in Evaluation (PRAIRE) Group housed at LSRI, has been selected as a recipient of the 2023 Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence Award (CAPE Award), given in recognition of Fendt’s contributions to the UIC community.

The PRAIRIE Group engages in the formative evaluation and applied research of education and training programs, policies, and initiatives with the goal of improving the quality of education and community life in urban settings.

“In (her) role as Director of PRAIRIE Group,” said Chancellor Maria Lynn Miranda, “Fendt’s work has been crucial in helping to draft successful grant proposals, creating new enrichment programs for hundreds of historically underrepresented students, while leading the evaluation teams for these projects.”

Fendt will serve as evaluator for an upcoming joint project between the University of Illinois’ Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) / Cardiff / U Birmingham for a Global Center on clean transportation solutions. The National Science Foundation (NSF)-led Global Center for Clean Energy and Equitable Transportation Solutions (CLEETS), is funded at ~$5M for the US team, and another 5M from UKRI is being awarded to the UK team.

“The new grant – with its focus on climate – shows exactly why Carol has received the CAPE Award,” said Dr. Alison Castro Superfine, director of the LSRI. “She’s not just evaluating for the sake of evaluating, but to effect tangible change.”

An Employee Recognition Award Ceremony is scheduled to be held November 2, 2023.
